Spanning across two categories and with no restrictions on identity or any other characteristic protected by law, all candidates must be based outside the United States.   

The program will offer the same pay rate to each fellow as they received in their home institutions.

Benefits

The Program will provide:

  • A salary for Early Career and Senior Fellows that equal the normal salary paid to the Fellows at their home institution. 
  • Medical insurance for all fellows through the Princeton University benefits plan.
  • Research funds to cover research-related expenses. 
  • If completing a physical fellowship at Princeton, Fellows will be given office space, computer access in a suite dedicated to the Program, as well as access to the Firestone Library.  
  • Assistance to the Fellows in finding appropriate housing through the University Housing Office and private landlords if a Fellow wishes it.
  • If completing a physical fellowship at Princeton, the Program will pay transportation costs for each Fellow, and his or her spouse or domestic partner and for their child/children
  • If completing a physical fellowship at Princeton, the Program will pay for the shipment of books and papers that are necessary for the continuation of research, but not for the shipment of household goods.

Eligibility

Eligibility requirements for the two candidate categories are- 

For Postdoctoral Scholars: Eligible postdoctoral scholars-

  • Must have completed all requirements for their Ph.D. before September 1, 2021. 
  • Cannot have more than two years of postdoctoral experience prior to the start of the appointment, September 1, 2021. 

The receipt of the Ph.D. is determined by the date on which all requirements for the degree at the applicant’s home institution, including the defense and filing of the dissertation, were fulfilled.  

If a candidate has turned in a final draft of their dissertation but not yet completed their Ph.D. before the start date, they may be temporarily appointed as a Senior Research Assistant with a 10% reduction in salary. Upon providing verification that they have completed all requirements for the Ph.D., they would then be promoted in rank and salary.

  • The postdoctoral appointment will be for one academic year for a scholar who has received a Ph.D. at an institution outside the United States and, who at the time of application, does not have a tenure-track faculty appointment.  

For Early-Career Scholars: Eligible Early-career scholars

  • Must have received their Ph.D. or equivalent within 10 years of the proposed start date of the fellowship.  The receipt of the Ph.D. is determined by the date on which all requirements for the degree at the applicant’s home institution, including the defense and filing of the dissertation, were fulfilled.
  • Must hold a faculty appointment, a professional research appointment, or be established independent scholars outside the United States at the time of application, to which they are expected to return at the conclusion of the fellowship.

Requirements/Specifications 

  • Early-career scholars will be appointed at the rank of Visiting Research Scholar. 
  • The Postdoctoral Scholars position is subject to the University’s background check policy.
  •  For fellows undertaking a physical fellowship at Princeton, with their spouse and child/children, the following limitations exist-

The program will pay for the most economical means of transportation for one round trip for the Fellow, spouse, partner and children from and to his or her home institution.

  • Whether a Fellow is appointed virtually or physically, they will be expected to participate in a course related to the theme of study, attend seminars, workshops and other events organized by the program, as well as present their ongoing projects in seminars.  
  • Fellows will have access to Firestone Library and will be able to engage in a wide range of events and activities across campus.

For applicants with a faculty appointment or a professional research appointment, an official letter from the applicant’s current employer affirming that, should an offer be made, the applicant would be permitted to accept it and to spend the academic year at Princeton University. 

About the Fung Global Fellows Program

Annually, the Fung Global Fellows program chooses scholars from around the world to be in residence at Princeton for an academic year to undertake research and discussion around a common topic.   

For this edition of the program, candidates will be considered in two categories:

  • Postdoctoral research associates who received their doctorate from an institution outside of the United States and who, at the time of application, do not hold a tenure-track faculty appointment.
  • Early-career scholars employed outside the United States who have a faculty appointment, a professional research appointment, or are an established independent scholar in the designated theme of the program.

Key Dates and Order of Program

All applications must be submitted with the required documents by November 16th, 2020 by 11:59PM EST. 

Referees must submit all required materials by the November 16, 2020 deadline. 

Fellowships will last for the entire academic year, from September 2021 to June 2022.

The number of candidates shortlisted will depend on the qualifications of the overall applicant pools.

Fellowships will be awarded to candidates who have already demonstrated outstanding scholarly achievement and exhibit unusual intellectual promise but are still at the beginning of their careers. 

Criteria for the fellowship include 

  • The strength of the candidate’s research projects
  • The relationship of those projects to the program’s theme
  • The candidate’s previous scholarly work
  • The candidate’s ability to contribute to the intellectual life and intellectual exchange of the program.

Due to COVID-related health and travel laws, the University policy will restrict a physical presence on campus and Fellows may be required to work virtually from their home location.  

Should restrictions be lifted, then Fellows would be required to be in residence at the Princeton University or the local vicinity.
