About the Australia-Japan Youth Dialogue

The Australia-Japan Youth Dialogue (AJYD) is an independent and non-partisan diplomatic initiative dedicated to strengthening the bilateral relationship with and through future leaders.

The AJYD seeks to be the premier initiative for the promotion of young leaders and ideas that will strengthen and support the future of the Australia-Japan relationship.

The AJYD aims to be representative by prioritizing diversity in all forms: gender, sector, location, and voice.

We have an Australian and a Japanese chapter – a balancing of AJYD that promotes visibility and engagement on both sides.

We work hard to promote our work and champion the relationship, building the AJYD voice and brand.

The inaugural AJYD dialogue took place in Melbourne in July 2017 and the second dialogue took place in Tokyo in November 2019.

Program and Venues

AJYD 2021 will build on the successes of our 2017 and 2019 programs with a new cohort of emerging leaders from Australia and Japan who represent the diversity of the relationship between our two countries.

Due to the pandemic and the priority to run the 2021 Dialogue in a manner that is safe for all participants and the public, decisions regarding event logistics and the use of domestic ‘hub’ cities will remain flexible until closer to the event date. If selected, delegates should still be willing to commit to in-person participation at a hub city for the Core Weekend (20-21 November) if that is confirmed in the event format. Expenses for all travel required of delegates will be covered by the AJYD Limited.
